William Sidney Hart was an American silent film actor and director, as well as a pioneer in the film industry. He appeared in more than one hundred silent films between 1910 and 1930, he directed more than twenty films, and was a mainstay of Mack Sennett's Keystone Studios. Hart is best known for his starring role as Bret Maverick in the long-running Our Gang comedy series.
